  • CRT for Affinity: Default

    Default

    The balance of a classic monitor: gentle curvature, crisp phosphors and a touch of bloom.

  • CRT for Affinity: Arcade

    Arcade

    A strongly curved tube, big phosphors and an intense bloom that makes everything glow, like an arcade.

  • CRT for Affinity: Bad signal

    Bad signal

    Heavy static, shifted colors, bold scanlines and dark edges: a signal slipping away.

  • CRT for Affinity: Subtle

    Subtle

    A flat screen with no curve or vignette: just the phosphor texture over your design.

Every control, explained

The same names you see in the script’s dialog.

Curvature
Bulges the image like a tube’s glass and rounds the corners.
Cell size px
The size of each phosphor cell, in document pixels.
Scanlines
Darkens the gaps between phosphor rows.
RGB mask
How much each cell splits into its three phosphors: red, green and blue.
Convergence
Shifts red and blue apart, more towards the edges, like a misaligned tube.
Bloom
The glow that spills over and fills the gaps between phosphors.
Brightness
Makes up for the light the mask and scanlines take away.
Vignette
Darkens the edges of the tube.
Noise
Fine static over the whole image.
Background
The color outside the tube. With “no color”, the corners stay transparent.

Tips

  • A whole artboardSelect an artboard or a group to treat the entire design as a single screen.
  • Transparent cornersWith the background set to “no color”, the tube sits on top of any other background in your document.
  • Large imagesCell size is in pixels: on a 4000 px photo, raise it so the phosphors stay visible.

Install

Ready in a minute

Scripts are imported once into Affinity’s library and stay there for good, one click away.

  1. Download the script

    Pick the dialog language, sign in with your account and download the .afscripts file.

  2. Import it into Affinity

    Open Window › Scripting › Scripts Library. In the panel’s ▾ menu, choose Import Scripts… and select the file.

  3. Select a layer and run it

    Click the script inside the Visual.af category. The first time, Affinity asks you to confirm that you trust it.

Adding a second effect?

To keep it in the same category, download the .afscript and import it from the Visual.af category’s ≡ menu with Import Script…. If you import another .afscripts, Affinity creates “Visual.af 2”: drag the script into the first one and delete the second.

Requirements

Affinity 3.3 or later, on Windows or macOS. The scripts don’t use the internet or touch your files: everything happens inside Affinity.

Frequently asked questions

Can I edit the effect afterwards?

The result is a new image layer. To change it, delete it and run the script again on the original layer, which stays intact.

Does it work with text, vectors or groups?

Yes. The script takes the selected layer exactly as it looks, whether it’s a photo, a pixel layer, a group, text or a whole artboard.

How fast is it?

On social media sized images each change takes about a tenth of a second. On 24 megapixel photos, around one second.

Does it animate like a real TV?

No: in Affinity the result is a still image. The rolling band and the flicker are left out; the static is applied.
