How it compares to paid logo grid plugins

The best-known logo grid plugins are made for Adobe Illustrator and charge a yearly subscription. Logo Grid is made for Affinity and costs nothing.

Five layers you can switch on and off

The grid goes into a “Logo Grid” group above your logo, one layer per part. Try the buttons: they show and hide each layer the way the Layers panel does in Affinity.

6 styles to start from

Pick one in the dialog and adjust from there. Every color, stroke and size can still be changed.

  • Logo Grid: Classic

    Classic

Blue guides, pink circles and a pale silhouette. It reads best on white or cream.

  • Logo Grid: Blueprint

    Blueprint

White lines over blueprint blue, with its own background layer, so it looks the same on any document.

  • Logo Grid: Swiss

    Swiss

Dashed red guides and red circles over a white silhouette, with black anchors.

  • Logo Grid: Neon

    Neon

Green lines and round anchors on a dark silhouette, for logos that live on black.

  • Logo Grid: Pencil

    Pencil

Dotted guides and dashed circles in graphite, like a sketch on paper. Corners get squares and smooth points get circles.

  • Logo Grid: Silhouette

    Silhouette

A flat gray shape with fine slate lines and no outline, which keeps the eye on the grid.

You decide how much it draws

Two controls set the amount of detail, and they also work on live text: this wordmark is set in Satoshi and stays editable after the script runs.

What each control does

The dialog has three columns, a live preview on the canvas and a running count of the anchors, handles, circles and guides it is about to draw.

Style
Loads one of the six looks. It changes colors, strokes, sizes and shapes, but not how many guides or circles you get.
Scale
Multiplies every stroke and marker. It starts at a value that fits the size of your logo and the spacing of its nodes.
Sensitivity
How many guides it draws, strongest first. At 0 % you get the frame and the main alignments. At 100 % every straight edge and every curve extreme gets its guide.
Angled lines
Extends the long straight diagonal edges of the logo across the grid. Short cuts are left alone.
Tangent lines
Extends the direction of every handle, so you can see where the curves line up.
Bounding box
Frames the logo and draws its center lines, plus the diagonals when the box is close to square.
Overshoot
How far the guides run past the logo, as a percentage of its size.
Fade toward the edges
Guides and circles fade out as they move away from the logo and disappear where the overshoot ends. It’s on by default.
Complexity
How many circles to fit, from the four essential ones at 1 to the smallest arcs at 5.
Largest circle
Hides circles larger than this percentage of the logo, which appear on nearly flat curves.
Center marks
Marks the center of every circle with a small cross.
Fill
Fills the logo as a silhouette under the grid. With no color, the original shows through.
Background
Paints a background behind the grid, as large as the guides. The Blueprint style uses it for its blue.
Shape
Draws anchors as squares, circles or diamonds. Auto uses squares for corners and circles for smooth points.
Size, point size and length
The size of the anchors, the dot at the end of each handle and how long the handles are drawn: from 10 % to 200 % of their real length, or all the same length.
Color, stroke and line style
Every layer has its own. Guides and circles can also be dashed or dotted.

Tips

  • Use live textSelect a text layer and the script reads its letters as curves. The text stays editable, so you can still change the font or the spacing afterwards.
  • Snap to your gridEvery guide and circle is a regular curve. Lock the Logo Grid group and snap to it while you refine the logo.
  • Run it againAfter changing the logo, select it and run the script again. It skips earlier Logo Grid groups, so the new grid only measures your artwork.

Install

Installing takes a minute

You import it once into Affinity’s script library, then run it from the Scripts panel whenever you need a grid.

  1. Download the script

Choose the dialog language, sign in with your Visual.af account and download Logo Grid (.afscripts).

  2. Import it into Affinity

Open Window › Scripting › Scripts Library and use Import Scripts… from the panel’s ▾ menu. Logo Grid appears in the Visual.af category.

  3. Select your logo and run it

Select the curves, shapes, text or group of your logo and click Logo Grid. The first time, Affinity asks you to confirm that you trust the script.

What it adds

A “Logo Grid” group above your logo with one layer per part. Your logo isn’t changed, and two undo steps remove the grid.

Requirements

Affinity 3.3 or later, on Windows or macOS. The script doesn’t use the internet or touch your files: everything happens inside Affinity.

Frequently asked questions

What is a logo construction grid?

It’s the set of lines, circles and nodes that shows how a logo is built: which curves share a circle, where the stems line up and how the proportions repeat. Designers use it to refine a mark and to explain it in case studies.

How do I make a logo grid in Affinity?

Import Logo Grid once, select your logo (curves, shapes, text or a group) and run it from the Scripts panel. The dialog previews the guides, circles, outline, anchors and handles on the canvas, and each part lands on its own layer when you accept.

Does it work in Affinity Designer 2?

No. Affinity Designer 2 doesn’t run scripts. Logo Grid needs Affinity 3.3 or later (the app that brings Designer, Photo and Publisher together), on Windows or macOS.

Does it change my logo?

No. It adds a “Logo Grid” group above your logo and leaves the original as it was. You can hide or delete the group at any time.

Does it work with text?

Yes. It reads live text as curves to measure it and leaves the text editable in your document.

Can I edit the grid afterwards?

Yes. Every layer is made of regular curves, so you can recolor it, change the stroke, delete single lines or copy it into another document.

I already have the Visual.af category. What happens?

Affinity doesn’t merge categories on import, so it creates a second one called “Visual.af 2” with Logo Grid inside. Both work the same.

Is it really free?

Yes. You only need a free Visual.af account to download it.
